Active and Passive Sentences

You can communicate verbally or in writing using either the active or passive voice. A sentence formulated with an active voice shows the subject to be performing an action. In a passive sentence, on the other hand, instead of the subject performing an action, the action of the sentence is done to the subject.

Active sentences are more popular and widely used because they are simpler, clearer, and more direct. As a result, you will come into contact with a more active voice, whether in writing or verbally.

Here are some examples of active sentences and their passive tenses:

  • Active: The boy kicked the ball.
  • Passive: The ball was kicked by the boy.
  • Active: My dad bought me a car last week.
  • Passive: A car was bought for me by my dad last week.
  • Active: They have cleaned the room.
  • Passive: The room has been cleaned.
  • Active: Jake caught the ball.
  • Passive: The ball was caught by Jake.

The example above shows you how you can make a passive sentence from an active one, and vice versa. However, active sentences are recommended because they are easier and clearer when compared to passive ones.
