Phrasal Verbs

These phrases are combinations of words, often a verb and a preposition, a verb and an adverb, or both. When the words that make up phrasal verbs are considered together, they have a different meaning than when the words are considered separately.

Some examples of phrasal verbs are:

  • Carry on
  • Work out
  • Going to
  • Bring up
  • Ask around
  • Break down
  • Broke in
  • Check in
  • Check out
  • Chip in
  • Count on

Here are some of the examples used in a sentence:

  • You can count on this course to improve your grammar.
  • It’s about time everyone started chipping in.
  • The guest checked out by 10 a.m.
  • A thief broke into my apartment last night.
  • I asked around, but nobody seemed to know where my cat was.
  • The reason he looks athletic is because he works out twice a week.
